National Parks

This is an album made to house postcards of all 59 National Parks. It is a three-piece bradel binding. The design on the boards were created using pieces of Katie MacGregor handmade paper torn to create a mountainscape. The title of the album and the initials of the recipient are stamped on the
cover with silver foil.

Cloth Reback and 4-Flap Box

A cloth reback was done on this book using a color matched muslin. A toned Japanese tissue was used to repair the damaged board corners and edges. A 4-flap box was made for this project.

Stitchillo

This is one of 15 copies of Stitchillo, published by Uppercase, bound by bookbinders across the country. It was bound as a three-piece bradel. The spine is covered in a textured kadhi paper and the boards are covered in pieces of Katie MacGregor handmade paper stitched together with yellow cotton embroidery floss. The title is stamped with a clear foil on the front board.

Diploma Cases

This was an edition of 120 full cloth diploma cases made for the graduation of the class of 2016 from the North Bennet Street School. Each case was stamped with two custom dies.

Jenkinsius Redivivus

This was a historical rebind of a 1681 London printing for a client. The original binding was removed, new handmade endpapers were added and the book was rebound as a tight back in quarter brown goatskin. The boards were sided up with a sugar paper and the title was stamped on a handmade paper label in carbon. Paper losses in the book were repaired with japanese tissue.

Good Breakfasts

This is a millimetre style rebind of a 1940 cookbook by Ambrose Heath. The book is bound in a yellow goatskin with a stamped paper and hidden vellum tips. The title was hand-tooled using carbon.

Endgrain Design & Repetitions

This is a Rubow style millimetre binding. The Legacy Press book is written by Cathleen Baker and John DePol and features over 100 of the patterns DePol created. There is a thin strip of maroon goatskin at the head and tail of the book and the label is stamped in gold foil on the same leather. The paper is a DePol pattern. The head edge is decorated with graphite.

The Little Prince

This is a rebind of the classic book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry with the original illustrations. It is bound in the millimetre style with a bright blue goatskin at the spine and corners. The title is handtooled with palladium.

Fine Binding & Rounded Spine Box

This binding of the Folio Society printing of Dante’s Vita Nuova is a full leather binding using bright blue Oasis goatskin. The head is gilt with moon gold and the headbands are wrapped leather with a few thread wraps. The surface-gilt kid and calf parchment discs sit into recesses cut in the boards. The boards and spine have blind and moon gold tooling and titling. The endpapers are a salt paper sprinkled with moon gold leaf made by the binder. The book is housed in a rounded spine box covered in quarter grey goatskin and sided up using the same salt paper as was used as the endpapers. The trays of the box are lined with a faux-suede.

Virginia House-Wife

This rebind of this book was done to replicate the original binding of the book. New handmade endpapers were added and the book was fully covered in a brown calfskin. The hand tooling on the spine and titling piece was done with gold leaf and matches the original tooling.

18th Century Models

These books are models of 18th century style French trade binding. The full binding is a hand-dyed and sprinkled calfskin blind tooled with a panel design on the boards and gold tooled on the spine. The endpapers are hand-marbled with the curl pattern. The quarter leather book is also bound using hand-dyed calf and sided up using an oak leaf marbled paper. The spine is hand-tooled with gold leaf.

L'Univers Océanie

This leather reback was done on this 1839 book printed in Paris. The missing spine was replaced with a hand-dyed calfskin and hand tooled with gold leaf in a period-appropriate style and hand painted to blend with the original marbling of the leather.

History of English Craft Bookbinding Technique

This book by Bernard Middleton was rebound using a trade style binding. It was bound in half light brown goatskin using a hand-marbled paper paste down and flyleaf. The titling piece was stamped using gold foil.

The Introduction to the Study of Physic

This is a rebind of the 1929 book by William Heberden printed on a handmade paper. It is bound in an undyed calfskin. The color was achieved by using the historical method of dying this style book with salts of tartar (hydrated potassium carbonate) and then sprinkled with copperous (ferrous sulphate). The head edge is gilt while the fore edge and tail are left with the deckle of the handmade paper. The headbands are wound with a blue silk. The hand tooling on the boards and spine are done with gold leaf. The endpapers are a stormont marbled paper.

In Evolution's Attic

This was an edition of 50 letterpress printed books bound as a flat back in full cloth with a custom stamp on the front of the case. While the edition was completed as a class project, I oversaw the project and managed the tasks and the class in order to meet the client’s deadline.

Case Bindings

These blank books are quarter and full cloth case bindings. The quarter cloth cases are sided up using hand marbled or decorative paper and they all have stuck on headbands. The full cloth case is covered in a handmade book cloth.

Haggadah Repair

This family haggadah from 1928 was repaired with a new cloth spine piece. The loose plate was tipped back into the book and the book was thoroughly cleaned.

This book by Cathleen Baker from Legacy Press was bound in quarter maroon goatskin in a bradel style binding with hidden leather corners. There are single wound endbands and the cover paper was hand-marbled. The title was stamped in gold foil.
